Recently, Anne-Marie Wanamp and Steven Bird delivered a joint presentation concerning ongoing efforts at the University of Goroka to incorporate oral language documentation into their undergraduate curriculum. The presentation was part of a symposium Strengthening language maintenance through cooperative training strategies, held at the University of Melbourne. The Language and Literature Department has identified over a dozen courses where oral language documentation can be created and used. The department has adopted the bilum – woven string bag – as a metaphor for the stories that are woven using language, and as the vessel for delivering valuable artefacts and knowledge.
